Hofstra’s Metzger Honored By Arthritis Foundation

Former Hofstra Men’s Lacrosse student-athlete James C. Metzger ’83 will be honored at the upcoming Arthritis Foundation’s 28th Annual Salute Your Staff Luncheon & Auction on Friday, April 4.

The event, which will take place at the Hilton Long Island Huntington located in Melville, NY, will be from 10:45 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“We are extremely proud of the amazing work that Jim continues to do within the community,” commented Hofstra University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. “Jim is a beacon of pride for everyone in the Hofstra community and someone who our current staff, coaches and student-athletes appreciate on a daily basis. We are honored to have Jim as a former student-athlete and alum of our great University. It is amazing to witness Jim’s commitment to giving back and assisting others through a wide range of philanthropic efforts.”

Metzger, an All-American in 1980 and a current member of the Hofstra Pride Club Board of Directors, is Chairman, CEO and founder of the The Whitmore Group, Ltd., a leading insurance brokerage and financial services firm with headquarters in Garden City, New York.

Metzger has been quite supportive of Hofstra, contributing funds to renovate the men’s and women’s lacrosse locker rooms and to make possible the Traditions Project – a history of the men and women’s lacrosse and football programs. His support also carries over to the academic side of campus as he has endowed a summer internship program within the Center for Civic Engagement in honor of his history professor, current faculty member, Michael D’Innocenzo.

In December of 2011 Metzger made the largest gift in the history of Hofstra Athletics.

The 28th Annual Arthritis Foundation Salute Your Staff Luncheon & Auction offers broad appeal to the Long Island business community. The event gives employers the opportunity to express their appreciation to colleagues and staff for their dedication and hard work. The luncheon festivities include mingling and networking, a delicious lunch and the excitement of silent and live auctions.

Nearly 500,000 Long Islanders, including 3,000 children, have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. To conquer this painful and debilitating disease, the Arthritis Foundation supports education, research, advocacy and vital programs and services.
