Two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Towson was picked to finish first yet again the CAA women’s lacrosse standings in 2014, according to a vote by the league’s head coaches.
The Tigers, who are guided by three-time CAA Coach of the Year Sonia LaMonica, earned four first-place votes for a total of 24 points in the 2014 preseason poll. The Dukes of James Madison followed closely behind with 21 points (earning one first-place nod) and Hofstra received a total of 17 points, including one first-place vote. Delaware was picked to finish fourth, while Drexel and William & Mary rounded out the predicted order of finish for the upcoming season.
Towson will look to senior Ashleigh Rohrback, the 2013 CAA Co-Player of the Year, who was also named to the IWLCA All Mid-Atlantic Region first-team after scoring a team-high 51 points on 19 goals and 32 assists last season. The Tigers also return three juniors who were All-CAA second-team members in 2013 — defender Michelle Dufault, goalkeeper Kelsea Donnelly and attacker Paige Duncan.
James Madison led the CAA in points and shot percentage last season and ranked second in goals per game. Senior attacker Amy Roguski (34 goals in 2013) is the only offensive returner for JMU to earn All-CAA first-team honors in 2013.
Hofstra recorded 11 wins under then-first-year coach Shannon Smith last year and returns its top three point scorers as well as 10 starters to this year’s squad. April Iannatta, a junior, earned Co-2013 CAA Defender of the Year honors last season.
Delaware is led offensively by one of the league’s top threats in Caitlin McCartney. She notched 41 goals and led the conference in goals per game (2.93) in 2013.
Drexel and William & Mary enter 2014 sharing similar circumstances as each program will be led by a new face at the head coaching position. The Dragons will be guided by their former assistant coach, Hannah Rudloff, who enjoyed a standout playing career at nearby University of Pennsylvania. The Tribe is now under the direction of former CAA great and Towson Tiger, Hillary Fratzke, who was a four-time All-CAA selection and two-time Player of the Year (2008, 2010).
