TOWSON, Md. – Junior outside hitter Katy Buck of the Towson University volleyball team has been named as a first team selection to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A biology major with a 3.99 G.P.A., Buck becomes the first Tiger since Adam Overbey (football) in 2000 to earn first team honors. She is the fifth Tiger in school history to earn first team Academic All-America® honors from CoSIDA.
The only junior on the first team this year, Buck served as one of the Tigers’ co-captains while starting all 29 matches. The 2012 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Preseason Player of the Year, Buck wasted little time in showing her dominance on the court as she was named the Battle at the Bay Tournament MVP in the season’s opening weekend. She had 40 kills, 19 digs and six blocks while hitting .273.
Buck was also named to the all-tournament team at the Hokie Classic and the Hilton University 49er Invitational. She had 37 kills and 23 digs in three matches at the Hokie Classic. While leading the Tigers to the Hilton University 49er Invitational Championship, Buck recorded 31 kills and 26 digs.
On September 8, Buck had 15 kills to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 win over Furman. The win over Furman started an 18-match win streak that carried the team through the end of the regular season. The 18 straight wins were one shy of the school record for the longest win streak. Buck posted double digit kills in 11 of the team’s 12 CAA matches and helped Towson post just its second undefeated conference record in program history. Buck reached a career milestone on October 14 at James Madison as she became the 13th player in program history to record the 1,000th kill of her career.
In the regular season finale against William & Mary, Buck recorded a career-high 23 kills. Despite the Tigers being upset in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament, Buck contributed 12 kills and 13 digs against Hofstra for her 11th “double-double” of the season.
Buck finished the season leading the team in kills (352) and ranked fourth in the CAA in kills per set (3.42).
“Katy is an extremely dedicated and focused student,” said Towson coach Bruce Atkinson. “She is definitely a deserving recipient of this award.”
She was joined on the Capital One Academic All-America® first team by Andrea Beck of Wake Forest, Moriah Bellissimo of Georgia Southern, Katherine Fischer of Oregon, Gina Mancuso of Nebraska and Ariel Turner of Purdue.
